We had great fun checking out our salt crystals. We dissolved salt in warm water until no more salt would dissolve. We then put in a pipe cleaner shaped as a candy cane into the solution. After a couple of weeks on a window we were left with the salt crystal deposits on the candy canes.

Saturday January 10th marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year - The Year of the Dragon.
We made some paper lanterns, made a money wallet and made a dragon. We sang the Chinese New Year Song - Gun Hay Fat Choy. Our classroom is a sea of red and yellow. We are learning about time. We learned that there are 60 seconds in 1 minute. We completed some one minute challenges. In these pictures we are making the tallest tower we can using cubes for 1 minute.
We were working hard on length in maths this week. We had great fun estimating the length and width of our tables using lollipop sticks, cubes, spans and yes - feet. We then looked at the metre stick and found lots of objects in our class which were longer than, about the same as and less than 1 metre. 1 metre is 100cm.
In our well-being lessons we have been learning about relating to others and how good kindness can make you feel. We are working on our Advent kindness challenge over the next few weeks too.
Today we sang our hearts out to this K is for kindness song! It is a sing along with Tori Kelly and the rest of the Sesame Street gang. We love it and felt so good after we sang it. Teacher thought we could be on the X Factor! We had great fun exploring some science equipment for Science Week 2023. Thank you Mrs Melvin and the science team for showing us lots of fun science.
We have been talking about our homes and homes in the past. One thing families did was make their own butter. Teacher made us some butter using cream. When the butter was churned, she drained off the buttermilk. We had the butter spread over some traditional Irish soda bread. Geraldine also brought in her churn and paddles.
Here's a selection of some Halloween songs from 1st Class. Enjoy!
We did lots of super Halloween experiments.
Magic Balloon - We blew up a balloon using a bottle water and an effervescent tablet. Density Experiment - We looked at different liquids and created a potion jar. We used treacle, golden syrup, water mixed with some red food colouirng and some oil. We could see the way each liquid settled. It looked like a potion. Spooky Messages - We drew a picture using using cotton buds, baking soda and water. Then we painted over it using turmeric mixed with rubbing alcohol (the best one for this is very liquidly hand sanitiser - the gel will work but it's not as good. Warning - turmeric will stain everything so wear gloves and protect surfaces. Witch's Potion - We used baking soda and food colouring in a small container. When vinegar was added it made a big fizz! We loved this and must have done it 6 times. |
