Spellings
Dear Parents,
Every week your child will be given 12 spellings. These are based on our Over the Moon Phonics Scheme/Jolly Phonic Spellings. Please help him/her to learn them.
Words 1 and 2 in each spelling list are regular two- or three-letter words, and the third is also regular, but has a consonant blend.
This means the word can be spelt by listening for the sounds and writing the letter(s) for them.
Words 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 generally feature the spelling/phonic pattern of the week, and are usually regular. Number 8 is a longer word, still based around the spelling pattern.
Words 9, 10, 11 and 12 are tricky words/high frequency words. This year we will be using the science-based heart word method which teaches the children to sound out the parts of irregular words that do not follow phonic rules. Children then only need to learn a small portion of the word that is the “tricky part” by heart.
You child can learn these harder words by saying the names of the letters in them as he/she writes them: for the word “half”, for instance, your child should say “aitch ai ell eff” several times until the word is known.
The “Look, Copy, Cover, Write, Check” method is an effective way for the children to learn to spell the tricky “word families”. The words are printed on the left-hand column of the template so that the children can practise one word family at a time at home. Children will also have a short activity every night which looks at the sound pattern for the week.
Your child will also have a spelling copy at school to refer to these words and practice dictation exercises and we will also use Jolly Grammar book 1 to reinforce these new words. We will have a display board in the class with these words and children will also work on a worksheet or on a whiteboard activity to reinforce these. Children will get an opportunity in small groups, twice a week to work on the tricky words. They will also put the new spelling pattern into context with some decodable reading.
As children will be learning 4 of these “tricky words/heart words” per week they can work on the Seesaw assignment weekly to reinforce work covered in school.
Your child will also have an activity to complete based on our new sound/spelling pattern. Later in the year they will put these words into sentences.
