This week in science, we have been learning all about fruit. We are doing a lunch box fruit check to see what fruit we have at school everyday and we are recording it in out copies. Eating fruit is good for us. When we sow a seed a plant grows. Some fruits have seeds inside them and some have seeds outside. We looked at an apple, a pear, a lemon, strawberry and peach and and estimated how many seed we thought it had. We also learned the names of some fruits and what different things you could make from fruit e.g. jam, chutney, apple tart, smoothies, fruit salad, banana boat ice-cream, bread and cakes. Today we made fruit kebabs. We could choose from banana, kiwi, mango, pineapple, grapes, pear, pineapple or apple. They were delicious. Some of us are going to make them when we get home.

On Friday we made pinch pots from clay. We looked at a video from I am an Artist website about clay - http://www.iamanartist.ie/clay/
We had great fun today listening and singing to this funny song - Down by the Bay. We started to think of different things that might happen. Down by the bay, Where the watermelons grow, Back to my home I dare not go. For if I do my mother will say: "Did you ever see a goose, Kissing a moose? Down by the Bay?" Today we had a visit from the Science Team in 6th class. They showed us lots of experiments. We explored forces, light, magnets, circuits and sound. Thank you 6th class and Mrs Melvin.
Some children in 1st Class travel to and from school the school bus. Have you seen the new school safety video from Bus Éireann? Buster and The Beltups want you to stay safe when you are on the school bus. So always remember to wear your seat belt! During the week in maths we looked at odd and even numbers. Some of us helped Miss Hallinan sort her socks into pairs. We learned the odd and even poem - 0, 2,4 6, 8 being even is just great. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 being odd is just fine. We also learned another poem - The Odd and Even Poem. We also put counters into pairs to see if there was an even number of counters or an odd number. We worked in pairs for this.
