Today we were exploring the ways to make the "short a" sound. We looked at words with "ai", magic e with a e.g. cake, bake, snake and words which have "ay" e.g. Kay, Shay, day, away. We also looked at this funny video about Geraldine Giraffe. She can be very funny. This month we have been exploring "Explanation texts" in both our reading and writing. After reading the explanation text on Papier-mâché we decided to give it a go and yes the warning was correct - it was very messy but great fun too. We created a form with a balloon, toilet roll holders and egg cartons. Today we attached layers of newspaper and paste. We will have to wait until they are dry and then repeat the layers again. Watch this space for updates!
We had a lovely visit to the Ballina Library on the 25th of September before swimming. Angela read us two funny stories. We then had a chance to browse the library and borrow some books. Did you know the Ballina Library now has a 3D printer? You can use the software https://www.thingiverse.com/ to create your image. 3D images can be printed in the library for free in a few hours. Why not have a go.
Today we started working on joining some patterns as practice for our joined writing. Teacher used this website to demonstrate the patteresns. Have a go at home.
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/writingRepeater/ Forget the homework tonight and get baking instead for the Hospice Coffee morning in Culleens NS on Friday 20th of September from 9am - 11am. Children are asked to bring in some home baking, some money (€2) and enjoy a drink and treat!
We had a great morning at the Jackie Clarke Museum. We walked up to the library where Sinéad gave us a wonderful talk about cinematic history - the first movies made and the first cinemas to Ballina. At the end of the presentation, we had a fun listening and responding task. We had to listen to pieces of music and match them to the type of movies we thought they were. After we walked back to the Jackie Clarke Museum and got our lunches. We then went into the vintage cinema room and watched some classic movie clips. Afterwards we got some pictures. We then walked up to the swimming pool for our swimming lessons. Thank you to Sinéad at the Jackie Clarke Museum for an excellent presentation. It is free for families to visit anytime.
Parents/Grandparents what was the first movie you saw in the Cinema? Leave us a comment. Miss Hallinan's first movie at the cimema was The Little Mermaid and Denise's first movie at the cinema was Lady and the Tramp.
For the next fortnight in English we will be reading about different types of art and reading lots of explanation texts about how to create certain pieces of art like Papier Mache, Marbling and Paper People. Today we had a discussion on what inspires people to create art. We had some very interesting responses. The website I am an Artist has some lovely videos about different types of art. Today we looked at how objects can be used for inspiration for art. Have a look.
http://www.iamanartist.ie/videos/ We are still exploring lines in our art lessons. On Friday we created some digital art using lines and the bucket fill tool in the "Paint" programme on the laptops. Have a look.
We had great fun last week completing "Scoot Maths". We worked in pairs to solve the basic addition problems on the cards which were around the classroom. When teacher called "Scoot" we had to move to the next problem. It was great fun. Have a look.
Scoot Maths 2019 from Culleens NS on Vimeo. We are having great fun using different tones of voice in our reading. Today we read an explanation text about "Why Do Onions make us Cry". We read it in different voices like happy, bored, tired and excited. We are also exploring our voices in our Call and Response songs like Lickety split and Mahachagogo.
The Sacrament of First Communion will be celebrated on the 23rd of May 2020 in St. Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina at 11am.
Children who are receiving the sacrament are also expected to attend the 4 "Do This in Memory" masses held throughout the year. Dates for these masses will be given shortly. We have art on a Friday. We exolored our first Digital Art piece. We used a website called "Scrapcolouring" to create colours and patterns for our names. You can try it at home too - Click here. You can also digitally colour in pictures on the website too - Scrapcolouring. Have a look at our names.
