The pops were so refreshing this evening.
We were working on our procedural genre again today. We read a procedural piece on making citrus lemonade and identified the different parts to the procedure. We then looked at the procedure to make Watermelon Pops by writing in the title, ingredients and what you need, the step-by-step process using words like First, Next, Then and Finally. The pops were so refreshing this evening.

We are working on the procedural genre in English. This procedural genre is any text where you follow directions in a step-by-step format.
There are some very bossy verbs when you read or write a procedure e.g. mix, jump, whisk, beat, cut, chop. We read some nice procedural texts and carried out two procedures: 1. Draw a tulip following the instructions 2. Make some Rice Krisipie buns - one of our class even wrote a note from Miss Hallinan to warn the other teacher NOT to eat our buns while they were setting in the fridge! Thank goodness none of them were eaten in the new staffroom! Stay tuned for more procedures in the next few weeks....
We are working on report writing in 1st Class. We brainstormed what happens in each season and put together an oral report. We hope you enjoy it.
We are working hard in 2nd class on procedural writing. Procedural writing is simply any text that provides instructions in a simple, step-by-step format. Here are some procedures we followed: Planting a SeedWe followed instructions on how to plant seeds. We also wrote this procedure. Some of the different seeds we planted were salad leaves, cress, peas and sunflowers. Our gardeners have the job to water them everyday. Thank you to Mr Byrne who kindly allowed us to use his window sills to place the plants - We have no window sills in the prefab - I CAN NOT WAIT FOR WINDOW SILLS IN THE NEW SCHOOL AMONG OTHER THINGS.... Frozen Banana LolliesWe read about this in our reader and then made them. Some of us didn't like the natural yogurt and decided if we made them again at home, we would skip the yogurt part and just add chocolate and freeze. Fairy Cakes/Queen CakesWe read about this recipe in our reader and made them. These were lovely. We added some butter cream icing on top with sprinkles.
The children made some lovely jars with ten things the love about their Mum/Mummy/Mammy/Mom/Amma for Mother's Day. Check out your Seesaw journal for a photo on your own.
2nd class did a great job reading their reader's theatre scripts to bring the Story of the Chinese Zodiac to life. Have a look here.
You can read the story of the Zodiac here -https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ChineseNewYear/ZodiacStory.aspx
Sunday 22nd of January marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rabbit. We listened to the Story of the Chinese Zodiac. You can read it here. We also found out that everyone in our class was born in the year 2014 - The Year of the Horse. We tasted some white rabbit sweets from China and also got a fortune cookie. We began reading our Reader's Theatre script on the Story of the Zodiac. We made some paper lanterns, made a money wallet and made a small paper rabbit puppet. We sang the Chinese New Year Song - Gun Hay Fat Choy and Rainbow Girl. Our classroom is a sea of red and yellow. We will continue our work on China and Chinese Festivals next week. Chinese Money WalletsWe got a lovely surprise after our run to find our Chinese Money Wallets were filled with coins. Chinese New Year Red Envelope are one of the favourite Chinese traditions for children since on New Year’s Day, they are given the shiny packets with money inside.
This week and next week, we will be exploring the theme of winter. We read about the "Big Snow of 1947" which fascinated us already with tales of the blizzard in Ireland.
We listened to our Irish story - Ag Súgradh sa Sneachta, practivied our "Sciorr an Mhuc" poem, painted our winter scene and made a little figure-skaters in art. We also listened to a song called "Do the Funky Penguin" by Rufus Thomas. We then learned the "Pengin Dance". It was great fun. We will be learning lots more next week. Last week in our poetry we read the poem "A Closet Full of Shoes" written by the poet Shel Silverstein. Who would believe there are so many different shoe types? 2nd Class worked on a collaborative Google Slide and sourced some images to describe each shoe mentioned in the poem. Download "A Closet Full of Shoes" below.
The long-awaited autumn presentation is now live! We hope you enjoy and learn lots about Belleek Woods, trees and autumn.
