We have been talking about our homes and homes in the past. One thing families did was make their own butter. Teacher made us some butter using cream. When the butter was churned, she drained off the buttermilk. We had the butter spread over some traditional Irish soda bread. Geraldine also brought in her churn and paddles.

We had a great day on Wednesday 1st of February celebrating our first spring Feast - the Feast of Saint Brigid. Thank you to 6th class who helped 2nd class make the crosses.
This week 2nd Class visited the Jackie Clarke Collection before swimming. We had a great morning. The workshop focused on Jackie Clarke's own scrapbook which he kept as a young boy in the 1940s. The children then got a chance to create their own scrapbooks. Everyone was really focused and interested.
There was great interest in the glass cabinet where Jackie's original scrapbook is on display. It is in a bulletproof, shatterproof cabinet where the temperature is just right to keep the precious scrapbook safe. We also saw the vault door from the old bank. Thank you to Sinéad for the great workshop. We are learning about Germany this week and looking at famous German people. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in Germany in 1879. He loved maths and science. When he was five years old his father gave him a magnetic compass. This triggered his interest in how things work. IN 1921 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Bethoven also a famous composer who was born in Bonn in Germany in 1770. He lost his hearing and eventually became completly deaf, but he continued to compose music. Moonlight Sonata is one of Beethoven's many famous pieces.
We worked in pairs to write the script for the Irish legend The Salmon of Knowledge. We then drew pictures. Teacher scanned them in. We then recorded our piece into the microphone and added a title to the slide. Have a look at The Salmon of Knowledge.
The Salmon of Knowledge from Culleens NS on Vimeo. We had a great morning at the Jackie Clarke Museum. We walked up to the library where Sinéad gave us a wonderful talk about cinematic history - the first movies made and the first cinemas to Ballina. At the end of the presentation, we had a fun listening and responding task. We had to listen to pieces of music and match them to the type of movies we thought they were. After we walked back to the Jackie Clarke Museum and got our lunches. We then went into the vintage cinema room and watched some classic movie clips. Afterwards we got some pictures. We then walked up to the swimming pool for our swimming lessons. Thank you to Sinéad at the Jackie Clarke Museum for an excellent presentation. It is free for families to visit anytime.
Parents/Grandparents what was the first movie you saw in the Cinema? Leave us a comment. Miss Hallinan's first movie at the cimema was The Little Mermaid and Denise's first movie at the cinema was Lady and the Tramp. We are learning lots about the Chinese New Year.

We learned about our flag and it's colours. We listened to 5th and 6th classes playing the National Anthem on their tin-whistles. We all stood up. On the 15th of March we will raise our flag at school. We all got a nice surprise when we heard the school would get the night off homework for being so good.
In History we were talking about our earliest memories. Some of us brought in special things that we had when we were babies. Some children also remembered to bring in pictures of when they were a baby and a toddler. We cut pictures out from magazines/newspapers and stuck them to the correct poster - baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult or elderly. Here are some children who brought in their special baby item.
