We went on our nature walk today in Belleek Woods. We met our tree expert and guide Cynthia at the duck pond. She showed us lots of different leaves and fruit from the trees. We then walked around and identified the different types of trees. It was a great trip.

We had a great day in Belleek Woods today. We met Niamh Hennessy from Coillte and Cyril Collins from Ballina. Niamh showed us the different types of trees in Belleek Woods and Cyril showed us the squirrel feeding box. Some of us saw a squirrel at the top of a tree. We saw a squirrel's home which is called a drey. We also planted some trees. When we got back from the classroom, Niamh Hennessy gave us a Coillte goody bag with a pen and pecil. We also got some trees for our school. Thank you Coillte. Here are some pictures from today. We will get a video up later. The Red SquirrelWe only have red squirrels in Belleek. The red squirrel has soft fur. It is light brown. His tail is as long as his body. It keeps him warm and helps him jump from tree to tree. The squirrels' home is called a drey. He makes his drey in the top of a tall tree. It is made of twigs, moss and leaves. The baby squirrels are born in spring. In autumn the squirrel gathers nuts and hides them. Sometimes he forgets where he has hidden the nuts. The squirrel sleeps for most of the winter. Sometimes he wakes up to eat. Have a look at these videos to learn more about the red squirrel. Shutterbugs from RTE JuniorShutterbugs is a programme on RTE Junior which combines wildlife, wild places, photography and adventure! You can read some Shutterbug facts from their page - Shutterbug Facts The Crete Boom and Belleek WoodsWe could see the Crete Boom ship on the Moy today. Here is a video of the inside of the ship taken by a drone. You can also see Belleek Woods and Belleek Castle. |
