Thank you to Laoise for sharing her Chinese treats with us today. It was a lovely surprise. We loved them.
2nd class are learning lots of new information about China and in particular about the Chinese festivals - Chinese New Year, The Lantern Festival and The Dragon Boat Festival. Our Chinese art is coming along nicely too.
The Chinese New Year begins on the 1st of February this year and they will celebrate the Year of the Tiger. The Chinese zodiac follows a twelve year cycle, each of the years being named after an animal. The Chinese believe that people born in a particular year take on the characteristics of the animal associated with that year. Most of our class were born in the year of the snake and some were born in the year of the horse. It is said that the "animal hides in your heart". To find out what year you were born in click here 15 days after the New Year festivities is the Lantern Festival. Did you know that during the Lantern Festival, lantern owners often place riddles on the lanterns? If you guess the riddle correctly you can win a prize. We are solving riddles at school and on Seesaw too for a small prize. We made some lanterns and money wallets. Red and gold are lucky Chinese colours. We also did some colouring about the Year of the Tiger and made a door hanger with a tiger. We also had a lovely treat of prawn crackers from Abbie. Next week we will learn more facts about China. We learned the song Rainbow Girl and Gong Hei Fat Choy'Happy New Year) Here are some other songs and videos with the lion and dragon dance and some New Year songs - Click here. We played the Chinese Dragon Game which is an ordering and sequencing numbers game based on the Chinese New Year dragon theme - Click here to play. We also had a lovely Chinese stirfry with chicken, vegetables and noodles. Thank you to Denise, Charlie's Mum for preparing them. They were delicious. Last Thursday and Friday we used the Bee Bots to work on our spatial awareness. We worked in small groups to programme the Bee Bot to move left, right, forward and backwards.
We also used the Bee Bot app on the iPads. Bee Bot app is a coding app which introduces kids to coding and programming. Bee Bot game is free to download for iOS (iPhone and iPad) devices and suitable for children 7-11. Bee-Bot app is a digital version of the Bee-Bot programmable floor robot. Last week in maths we looked at symmetry. Here are some of our symmetrical picture made with black card and tissue paper.
For science this week, we looked at various materials and made predictions if we thought they were absorbent or waterproof. Our task was to find the best material for a raincoat. After our predictions we tested the materials. We found that the best material for a raincoat was the plastic and the best absorbent material for mopping up spills was the cloth.
We used some instruments to keep a rhythm (ta, ta, ti-ti, ta) for the Winter Rap. Hope you enjoy.
