Sunday 22nd of January marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rabbit. We listened to the Story of the Chinese Zodiac. You can read it here. We also found out that everyone in our class was born in the year 2014 - The Year of the Horse. We tasted some white rabbit sweets from China and also got a fortune cookie. We began reading our Reader's Theatre script on the Story of the Zodiac. We made some paper lanterns, made a money wallet and made a small paper rabbit puppet. We sang the Chinese New Year Song - Gun Hay Fat Choy and Rainbow Girl. Our classroom is a sea of red and yellow. We will continue our work on China and Chinese Festivals next week. Chinese Money WalletsWe got a lovely surprise after our run to find our Chinese Money Wallets were filled with coins. Chinese New Year Red Envelope are one of the favourite Chinese traditions for children since on New Year’s Day, they are given the shiny packets with money inside.
This week 2nd Class visited the Jackie Clarke Collection before swimming. We had a great morning. The workshop focused on Jackie Clarke's own scrapbook which he kept as a young boy in the 1940s. The children then got a chance to create their own scrapbooks. Everyone was really focused and interested.
There was great interest in the glass cabinet where Jackie's original scrapbook is on display. It is in a bulletproof, shatterproof cabinet where the temperature is just right to keep the precious scrapbook safe. We also saw the vault door from the old bank. Thank you to Sinéad for the great workshop. Thank you to Laoise for sharing her Chinese treats with us today. It was a lovely surprise. We loved them.
2nd class are learning lots of new information about China and in particular about the Chinese festivals - Chinese New Year, The Lantern Festival and The Dragon Boat Festival. Our Chinese art is coming along nicely too.
The Chinese New Year begins on the 1st of February this year and they will celebrate the Year of the Tiger. The Chinese zodiac follows a twelve year cycle, each of the years being named after an animal. The Chinese believe that people born in a particular year take on the characteristics of the animal associated with that year. Most of our class were born in the year of the snake and some were born in the year of the horse. It is said that the "animal hides in your heart". To find out what year you were born in click here 15 days after the New Year festivities is the Lantern Festival. Did you know that during the Lantern Festival, lantern owners often place riddles on the lanterns? If you guess the riddle correctly you can win a prize. We are solving riddles at school and on Seesaw too for a small prize. We made some lanterns and money wallets. Red and gold are lucky Chinese colours. We also did some colouring about the Year of the Tiger and made a door hanger with a tiger. We also had a lovely treat of prawn crackers from Abbie. Next week we will learn more facts about China. We learned the song Rainbow Girl and Gong Hei Fat Choy'Happy New Year) Here are some other songs and videos with the lion and dragon dance and some New Year songs - Click here. We played the Chinese Dragon Game which is an ordering and sequencing numbers game based on the Chinese New Year dragon theme - Click here to play. We also had a lovely Chinese stirfry with chicken, vegetables and noodles. Thank you to Denise, Charlie's Mum for preparing them. They were delicious. We had great fun learning about the Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rat. We sampled a stir-fry with noodles, made Chinese money wallets and got suprise coins in them, we made lanterns and rat pictures too.
Today in Geography we explored Our World using Google Earth. We looked at the model of the 3D earth. We then explored the size of the 7 continents. When we eexplred Euope we searched for Ireland. We saw how Ireland is an island. We then searched for County Mayo and then searched for Ballina. We also searched for some of our homes in Ballina and used Google Street Viewer (yellow man) to find our homes. We also found our school. We saw a few changes in our school yard. Have a go at home.

We are learning the song Popocatépetl this week and are thinking about the sounds volcanoes make. We are using symbols to show the sounds. We will record the sounds on Friday. Popocatépetl is a big volcano, far away in Mexico. Popocatépetl goes bang, sizzle, sizzle, bang! |
