This week we were learning about 3D shapes. We learned this poem: We also made a cube, cylinder, cuboid and cone. We used a ball to examine the sphere. We learned about how many faces each shape has, how many edges and how many corners. We then looked at each shape a little more to see would it roll, slide or stack.

Yesterday we listened to the story - The Polar Express. You can listen to it on the video. The bell was very important in the story so we made our own 3D bells from paper. Today two members of the Irish Army visited our school. We learned about our flag and it's colours. We listened to 5th and 6th classes playing the National Anthem on their tin-whistles. We all stood up. On the 15th of March we will raise our flag at school. We all got a nice surprise when we heard the school would get the night off homework for being so good.
Today we had a visitor to our school - Margaret O'Malley from the HSE. She talked to us about the importance of brushing our teeth in the morning and evening. We should use a pea sized amount of tooth paste on our toothbrush. We also learned that the best drinks for our teeth are milk and water. There is alot of hidden sugar in food which causes plaque to form on our teeth so choose foods and drinks wisely.
We have been learning lots about milk. We are learning where milk comes from and the process of dairy food production. We are learning about dairy products - cheese, cream, yogurt, and how to make healthy food choices. We learned that we should eat 3 portions of dairy - milk, cheese or yogurt every day. Have a look at this video to see how cheese is made. Some of us knew the breed of the cows that are milked - friesian cow. Alot of us like to eat cheese toasties, cheese strings or cheese on pasta. Today we made butter by whisking cream until it changed colour from white to yellow. We saw that the solid (yellow part) separated from the liquid which was buttermilk. In the past people had no electric whisks so they used a butter churn. This was hard work and it took a long time to make the butter. It was mainly the women who made the butter. Here we are enjoying homemade butter on brown bread.
