We had great fun checking out our salt crystals. We dissolved salt in warm water until no more salt would dissolve. We then put in a pipe cleaner shaped as a candy cane into the solution. After a couple of weeks on a window we were left with the salt crystal deposits on the candy canes.

We had great fun exploring some science equipment for Science Week 2023. Thank you Mrs Melvin and the science team for showing us lots of fun science.
We did lots of super Halloween experiments.
Magic Balloon - We blew up a balloon using a bottle water and an effervescent tablet. Density Experiment - We looked at different liquids and created a potion jar. We used treacle, golden syrup, water mixed with some red food colouirng and some oil. We could see the way each liquid settled. It looked like a potion. Spooky Messages - We drew a picture using using cotton buds, baking soda and water. Then we painted over it using turmeric mixed with rubbing alcohol (the best one for this is very liquidly hand sanitiser - the gel will work but it's not as good. Warning - turmeric will stain everything so wear gloves and protect surfaces. Witch's Potion - We used baking soda and food colouring in a small container. When vinegar was added it made a big fizz! We loved this and must have done it 6 times. We had a very special guest to mark World Animal Day 2023. Samuel Coleman, Tobias' Dad brought in Tobias' pet pigeon Tom.
Tom is a five month old giant pigeon. The breed is called Hungarian Giant originating from Hungary. Tom's parents are from Poland. Tobias has had his pigeon since it was a chick and hopefully Tom will live for 16 years about the same as a dog. We all loved Tom. All children have their individual photo on their Seesaw Profile. Here are a few extra photos.
We are working on report writing in 1st Class. We brainstormed what happens in each season and put together an oral report. We hope you enjoy it.
The weather was ideal last week for our winter walk (not so ideal for travel though). We had a lovely time walking around the school grounds looking for signs of winter. Have a look at some of the photos we took on the iPad. It was -6 degrees one morning last week. That is cold! Science week was the 14th - 18th at school. We had a great time exploring lots of different science materials. Here is a snapshot. The Pencil Trick. Ouch!We made spinning topsMrs Melvin's Science StationsBuilding the Highest Tower using Cocktail Sticks and PlaydoughWe put a gummy bear in water and left it for one day. Look at the size of it now! We put an egg in a jar of water. It sank. Then we put it in a jar of salty water and it floated. We placed an orange with skin on in water and it floated. We then put an orange with no skin on in water and it sank..
The long-awaited autumn presentation is now live! We hope you enjoy and learn lots about Belleek Woods, trees and autumn.
Autumn in 2nd Class 2022 from Culleens NS on Vimeo. 2nd Class enjoyed a lovely trip to Belleek Woods to celebrate National Tree Day in Ocotber. Thank you to Cynthia for a very informative talk. Stay tuned for our autumn presentation coming soon.
We also had a lovely surprise visit from Sam Coleman. Sam brought in his King pigeon Antonia. Thank you so much to the Colemans. She is beautiful.
For the next few weeks in English, we will be working on the Explanation Genre. We will be reading lots of explanation texts and learning how to write an explanation piece of writing. The Explanation Genre is all about the questions - Why and How e.g. Why should you brush your teeth? How do Snails Move? Why Do we get Sick? What are Goosebumps? How do you make Paper Mache?
Let's Find Out, RTEjr's science series asks lots of these questions. You can watch it on RTÉ Player whenever you want! - Let's Find Out Series All aboard the spaceship Curiosity, captained by a furry alien named Zoom and her human crew mates - the scientists. In each episode, Zoom asks a question about planet earth and the crew try to answer it for her, along with the help of some super smart earthling kids. They also have a page with cool experiments from the series - www.rte.ie/learn/lets-find-out/ |
