Stay tuned for more photographs later the week but here is a taster.
We have been reading lots of explanation pieces in our Over the Moon literacy. We are also learning how to write an explanation piece. This week we read about how to make papier-mâché, marbling and paper people so we had to try them out to put the explanation into practice. Stay tuned for more photographs later the week but here is a taster.

I got an email this morning telling me that we had earned a badge from Epic Books - 2nd Class have read over 100 books. Keep up the good work everyone! Super News. Remember you can install Epic Books as an app or use the Epic website - https://www.getepic.com/sign-in Today we had great fun designing our own Newspaper headline for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We worked in pairs to generate a newspaper cover page encouraging people to visit Jericho to see Jesus. We will print them off tomorrow and our parents can see them at the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday. Have a go at home yourself.
http://www.classtools.net/breakingnews/ Today we were learning about adjectives. We know that adjectives describe a noun e.g. a boring sentence like The cat sat on the wall can be made more interesting by adding adjectives e.g. The black and white furry cat sat on the high wall.
As Halloween is coming we then worked in pairs to write a monster poem. We used the website http://www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/html/fiction/my_monster/index.htm to create our poems using lots of adjectives. It was great fun. Tomorrow we will illustrate our monsters. Today we were exploring the ways to make the "short a" sound. We looked at words with "ai", magic e with a e.g. cake, bake, snake and words which have "ay" e.g. Kay, Shay, day, away. We also looked at this funny video about Geraldine Giraffe. She can be very funny. This month we have been exploring "Explanation texts" in both our reading and writing. After reading the explanation text on Papier-mâché we decided to give it a go and yes the warning was correct - it was very messy but great fun too. We created a form with a balloon, toilet roll holders and egg cartons. Today we attached layers of newspaper and paste. We will have to wait until they are dry and then repeat the layers again. Watch this space for updates!
We had a lovely visit to the Ballina Library on the 25th of September before swimming. Angela read us two funny stories. We then had a chance to browse the library and borrow some books. Did you know the Ballina Library now has a 3D printer? You can use the software https://www.thingiverse.com/ to create your image. 3D images can be printed in the library for free in a few hours. Why not have a go.
Today we started working on joining some patterns as practice for our joined writing. Teacher used this website to demonstrate the patteresns. Have a go at home.

For the next fortnight in English we will be reading about different types of art and reading lots of explanation texts about how to create certain pieces of art like Papier Mache, Marbling and Paper People. Today we had a discussion on what inspires people to create art. We had some very interesting responses. The website I am an Artist has some lovely videos about different types of art. Today we looked at how objects can be used for inspiration for art. Have a look.
http://www.iamanartist.ie/videos/ We are having great fun using different tones of voice in our reading. Today we read an explanation text about "Why Do Onions make us Cry". We read it in different voices like happy, bored, tired and excited. We are also exploring our voices in our Call and Response songs like Lickety split and Mahachagogo.
Today we were revising opposites. We played the QR Code challenge in pair. Each pair had an iPad and a record sheet. We had to work together to scan in the question which was on a QR Code and then record our answers on an answer sheet. It was great fun.
We had a wonderful morning on Wednesday when Connor's parents John and Donna came in with their pet ferrets. We learned so much about these intersting creatures. Some of us now want a pet ferret! Thank you so much for your visit.
For our literacy on Monday April 1st, we read an information text about the Lirpaloof Bird. We were all facinated by this bird and it's features so we headed outside to see could see spot it as it migrates to Ireland during the early days of April. The Lirpaloof likes seeds and insects but it also eats something different - carrots! This gives it it's bright orange appearance. It is said that the Lirpaloof likes to stay in high trees and to call the bird it is recommended to sing to it rather than shout. So that's what we did. Have a look........

Did you know that Lirpaloof is April Fool backwards!
Check out our Library Book Scavenger Hunt video. We worked in pairs to find the answers to certain questions based on our library books. We discovered lots of books we didn't even realise were in our library. It was great fun.
