Today we learned about coding with BeeBots. We divided into small group. Each group had a task:
It was great fun. We will continue with the stations tomorrow again. Next week we hope to visit the Infant Classrooms and teach them how to use Bee Bots. This morning we had a lovely treat from 2 student teachers from Saint Pats College in Dublin - Ms McCarrick and Ms O'Boyle. Using the iPads and laptops we did an hour of Code. We had to pick a character from Minecraft - Steve or Alex. To complete the Voyage Aquatic we had to solve puzzles using code. The screen is split into 3 areas - The Minecraft World, the middle area is the toolbox which contanins coding commants and on the right is the workspace where you give commants to build your programme and control your movements. Have a go at home. It was great fun. Check out the link - https://studio.code.org/s/aquatic/stage/1/puzzle/1 We had great fun today with our maths stations. Thank you to Mrs Melvin and the Transition Year students for their help.
We had great fun last week completing "Scoot Maths". We worked in pairs to solve the basic addition problems on the cards which were around the classroom. When teacher called "Scoot" we had to move to the next problem. It was great fun. Have a look.
Scoot Maths 2019 from Culleens NS on Vimeo. Bee-Bot is an exciting new robot designed to teach sequencing, estimation, problem solving and just having fun.
Last week we used Bee=Bots for the first time. Before this we had used the Bee-Bot app on the iPads. We are now much more familar with Bee-Bots. We plan to help the Junior and Senior Infants with using Bee-Bots after our Communion so stay tuned. We had great fun exploring our tens and units using a Walkabout Tens and Units Game from Seomra Ranga. Our two helpers placed 26 cards around the classroom. We then had to work in pairs to walkabout the classroom and find out the number shown on the abacus and record it on our record card.
Have fun singing the Days of the Week and Months of the Year songs. This week in maths we are revising adding 1, adding zero the hero and doubles. Have a go at the doubles rap. Dear Parents
This week in maths we revised our tens and units. We then moved on to looking at renaming tens and units. This forms the basis for our subtraction lessons that we are working on this week in maths. When you were at school you may have learned a different way of subtracting/take away i.e. borrow, pay back method. In the revised curriculum your child will focus on the renaming method of subtraction. There is also a tip sheet available with advise and ideas for helping your child with subtraction available here. Also a tip sheet and video examples on helping your child with maths in 1st and 2nd class is available here. This is a little rhyme the children will be learning to help remember to rename or not rename the tens and units when subtracting. More on top? No need to stop! More on the floor? Go next door. Get one ten. That’s ten units more. Here are two useful videos from the NCCA on subtracting. https://vimeo.com/ncca/review/107149045/f17c0f319c https://vimeo.com/ncca/review/107149046/106149ec17 We are learning lots about the Chinese New Year.
Here is a fun maths activity you can do at home for ordering and sequencing number. http://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/chinese-dragon-ordering This year is the year of the Rooster.
