This week in maths we revised our tens and units. We then moved on to looking at renaming tens and units. This forms the basis for our subtraction lessons that we are working on this week in maths. When you were at school you may have learned a different way of subtracting/take away i.e. borrow, pay back method. In the revised curriculum your child will focus on the renaming method of subtraction.
There is also a tip sheet available with advise and ideas for helping your child with subtraction available here.
Also a tip sheet and video examples on helping your child with maths in 1st and 2nd class is available here.
This is a little rhyme the children will be learning to help remember to rename or not rename the tens and units when subtracting.
More on top?
No need to stop!
More on the floor?
Go next door.
Get one ten.
That’s ten units more.
Here are two useful videos from the NCCA on subtracting. https://vimeo.com/ncca/review/107149045/f17c0f319c
