On our walk from the library, we spotted a diver submerging to underpin the bridge (we think). We were in the right place at the right time.

For science this week, we looked at various materials and made predictions if we thought they were absorbent or waterproof. Our task was to find the best material for a raincoat. After our predictions we tested the materials. We found that the best material for a raincoat was the plastic and the best absorbent material for mopping up spills was the cloth.
This is our presentation of Autumn in Belleek Woods. We hope you enjoy. Remember to turn the volume up to hear it.
Mrs Melvin came around on Wednesday to show us some science equipment. We had great fun exploring. Thank you Mrs Melvin.
We had great fun this afternoon playing with a stomp rocket. We had rockets shooting up into the air and thrills of excitement. A lot of children wanted to know where they could buy it. They can be purchased from Cogs the Brain Shop - https://cogsthebrainshop.ie/product/stomp-rocket-jr-glow/
We went on our nature walk today in Belleek Woods. We met our tree expert and guide Cynthia at the duck pond. She showed us lots of different leaves and fruit from the trees. We then walked around and identified the different types of trees. It was a great trip.
This week was Engineering Week. We spoke about what an engineer does and looked at this video. We then took on an engineering challenge in pairs - The Marshmallow challenge. Our first challenge was to design a structure, which had a minimum of 4 sides. We all got on great with this one. The next challenge was more of a challenge! We had to design a tower, which was minimum 3 cocktail sticks high. Well done to the winning group who came up with a solution in the last 2 minutes. It was great fun. The future is bright with these kids!
We are learning about Germany this week and looking at famous German people. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in Germany in 1879. He loved maths and science. When he was five years old his father gave him a magnetic compass. This triggered his interest in how things work. IN 1921 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Bethoven also a famous composer who was born in Bonn in Germany in 1770. He lost his hearing and eventually became completly deaf, but he continued to compose music. Moonlight Sonata is one of Beethoven's many famous pieces.
This week is Science Week. We are working in groups of 3 or 4 to present an experiment to the school on Friday during assembly. Stay tuned for photos and updates. Here is a little taster from Science Bob showing one of the experiments.
We had great fun with spaghetti, tape and a marshmallow. The aim was to build the tallest freestanding tower, which supported the marshmallow on top. It was great fun working in pairs. At the end of 40 minutes teacher measured the highest structure. Some of us learned a very valuable lesson - Never give up! :)
Here we have some expeirments from science week - bouncy egg, bend a chicken bone with vinegar and growing a hyacinth flower.
We had a visit from 6th Class who showed us lots of different science experiments in groups. They were great.
