We had a visit from 6th Class who showed us lots of different science experiments in groups. They were great.

Next week is Science Week. We will be presenting 7 experiments in assembly in groups of 4 next Friday. We are looking forward to it. Here are some cool videos from Science Bob that you can try at home. Science Bob website has lots of great ideas for scientific experiments. Enjoy. Today we did a magic skittles experiment. We worked in groups of three and two groups of two, to arrange our skittles into a pattern. Have a look at the photos. Miss Hallinan then poured luke warm water in the middle of the plate and here's what happened. We love the colours.
For science this week we looked at a skittles experiment. We worked in groups of three. We recorded our skittles pattern using the app "Seesaw". Miss Hallinan poured on hot water in the middle of the plate and we watched the magic unfold. Our patterns were beautiful. We recorded our findings with Seesaw app and we tagged the children who were in our group so we can look back at it again. Have a look at some of the amazing patters.
1st Class were busy helping Miss Hallinan to bake a cake while 2nd class were in the hall doing choir practice for mass on Monday. This week were talking about Birthdays. We followed the recipe in our Unlocking SESE book and learned about mixing ingredients.

Today every class in the school had a science show from Declan Holmes from Primary Science Ireland. The lesson for 1st and 2nd Class was on sound. It was great fun. After the show we went to the hall where 6th class showed us experiments which they had learned from Declan earlier in the day. Have a look.
We also looked at this video All About Volcanoes. Today we were learning about frogs. Here is a fun song to sing along to called Five Little Speckled Frogs. You can also learn about the life cycle of the frog on this website - http://www.turtlediary.com/video/frog-life-cycle.html
Today we had a visitor to our school - Margaret O'Malley from the HSE. She talked to us about the importance of brushing our teeth in the morning and evening. We should use a pea sized amount of tooth paste on our toothbrush. We also learned that the best drinks for our teeth are milk and water. There is alot of hidden sugar in food which causes plaque to form on our teeth so choose foods and drinks wisely.
We have been learning lots about milk. We are learning where milk comes from and the process of dairy food production. We are learning about dairy products - cheese, cream, yogurt, and how to make healthy food choices. We learned that we should eat 3 portions of dairy - milk, cheese or yogurt every day. Have a look at this video to see how cheese is made. Some of us knew the breed of the cows that are milked - friesian cow. Alot of us like to eat cheese toasties, cheese strings or cheese on pasta. Today we made butter by whisking cream until it changed colour from white to yellow. We saw that the solid (yellow part) separated from the liquid which was buttermilk. In the past people had no electric whisks so they used a butter churn. This was hard work and it took a long time to make the butter. It was mainly the women who made the butter. Here we are enjoying homemade butter on brown bread.
This week in science, we have been learning all about fruit. We are doing a lunch box fruit check to see what fruit we have at school everyday and we are recording it in out copies. Eating fruit is good for us. When we sow a seed a plant grows. Some fruits have seeds inside them and some have seeds outside. We looked at an apple, a pear, a lemon, strawberry and peach and and estimated how many seed we thought it had. We also learned the names of some fruits and what different things you could make from fruit e.g. jam, chutney, apple tart, smoothies, fruit salad, banana boat ice-cream, bread and cakes. Today we made fruit kebabs. We could choose from banana, kiwi, mango, pineapple, grapes, pear, pineapple or apple. They were delicious. Some of us are going to make them when we get home.
Today we had a visit from the Science Team in 6th class. They showed us lots of experiments. We explored forces, light, magnets, circuits and sound. Thank you 6th class and Mrs Melvin.
Here is our video of our trip to the woods. Enjoy.
Belleek Woods Walk 2015 from Culleens NS on Vimeo. We had a great day in Belleek Woods today. We met Niamh Hennessy from Coillte and Cyril Collins from Ballina. Niamh showed us the different types of trees in Belleek Woods and Cyril showed us the squirrel feeding box. Some of us saw a squirrel at the top of a tree. We saw a squirrel's home which is called a drey. We also planted some trees. When we got back from the classroom, Niamh Hennessy gave us a Coillte goody bag with a pen and pecil. We also got some trees for our school. Thank you Coillte. Here are some pictures from today. We will get a video up later. The Red SquirrelWe only have red squirrels in Belleek. The red squirrel has soft fur. It is light brown. His tail is as long as his body. It keeps him warm and helps him jump from tree to tree. The squirrels' home is called a drey. He makes his drey in the top of a tall tree. It is made of twigs, moss and leaves. The baby squirrels are born in spring. In autumn the squirrel gathers nuts and hides them. Sometimes he forgets where he has hidden the nuts. The squirrel sleeps for most of the winter. Sometimes he wakes up to eat. Have a look at these videos to learn more about the red squirrel. Shutterbugs from RTE JuniorShutterbugs is a programme on RTE Junior which combines wildlife, wild places, photography and adventure! You can read some Shutterbug facts from their page - Shutterbug Facts The Crete Boom and Belleek WoodsWe could see the Crete Boom ship on the Moy today. Here is a video of the inside of the ship taken by a drone. You can also see Belleek Woods and Belleek Castle.
Here is a video from last years walk. Let's hope the weather is good.
